Second Somatosensory Cortical Area


One site along the parietal operculum corresponded to previous conjectures about a second somatosensory cortical area (SII) in humans.  

Single neuron responses from the second somatosensory cortical area (SII) of macaque monkeys were studied using computer-controlled vibratory stimuli ranging in frequency from 10 to 300 Hz.  

Responses of 492 single neurons from the second somatosensory cortical area of macaque monkeys were studied using computer controlled ramp indentations.  

Efferent neurons studied included callosal neurons (CC neurons, n = 52), ipsilateral corticocortical neurons (C-IC neurons, n = 48) that project to or beyond the second somatosensory cortical area (S-2), and corticofugal neurons of layer 5 (CF-5 neurons, n = 97) and layer 6 (CF-6 neurons, n = 59) that project to and/or beyond the thalamus.  

(6) In the second somatosensory cortical area (SII), neurons projecting to the brain stem were immediately adjacent caudolaterally to the barrel field of SI, whereas neurons projecting to the upper spinal cord were more lateral.  

Efferent neurons studied included ipsilateral corticocortical neurons (C-IC neurons, n = 56) that project to or beyond the second somatosensory cortical area (S-2) and corticofugal neurons of layer 5 (CF-5 neurons, n = 75) and layer 6 (CF-6 neurons, n = 92) that project to and/or beyond the thalamus.  

The somatotopic organization of the second somatosensory cortical area (SII) and receptive fields of multineuron responses to cutaneous stimulation were studied in cats 6-16 months after lesions of the forelimb representation in the primary somatosensory area (SI) at 4 days, 4 weeks of age or in adults.  

The somatic sensory projections to this cortex were considered homologous to those defined in other species as the second somatosensory cortical area (SII).
